The short answer
Furnish in this order: the sectional first (it's the piece you'll live on — and it's what we do best), then mattress and bed, then a dining table, then everything else. Buy the big anchor pieces new and fill in accessories over time — a half-furnished home with a great sectional and a great bed beats a fully furnished home of compromises. Everything below ships free across the contiguous 48 states, and financing is available if you'd rather not pay all at once.
The order that actually works
New-home furnishing goes wrong when people try to do every room at once. Prioritize by how you live:
- Sit. The sectional for the living room comes first — it's our best seller for a reason. You'll spend more waking hours here than anywhere else in the house, and it's the piece guests see. Get this right and the rest of the home follows.
- Sleep. Bed, mattress, pillows. Night one matters, so this is second — not first.
- Eat. A dining table and chairs — even a small one. Eating at a real table changes how a new house feels.
- Everything else. Coffee tables, rugs, lamps, dressers, nightstands, decor. These fill in over weeks, not days.
Set a per-room budget before you shop, and put 60–70% of it into the anchor piece of each room. A $2,000 sectional on a $200 rug looks intentional. The reverse looks like you ran out of money.
The living room: start here
Start here — this is the room you live in and the room guests see, and the sectional is our best-selling category for a reason. One great sectional beats a roomful of mediocre pieces, so this is where the first and biggest decision goes.
- The sectional or sofa. For maximum comfort, the Rally-Up Power Reclining Sectional — power recline, adjustable headrests, modular pieces. For leather and flexibility, the Emilia Modular Leather Sectional — genuine leather seating areas, rearrangeable layout. For a classic sofa, the Bixler Sofa or a stationary loveseat for smaller rooms.
- Coffee table. Match the room's tone: the Amberly Marble Round Coffee Table for polish, something simpler for a casual family room. Keep 14–18 inches between it and the sectional.
- Rug. A good rug defines the seating area in an open-concept home — go big enough that it doesn't look like a placemat under the coffee table. Front legs on the rug is the most popular setup, but plenty of great rooms do it differently. The Aberdeen Jute Area Rug works under almost anything.
- TV stand. The 02 TV Cabinet handles the media wall without dominating it.
- Accent chair + ottoman. An accent chair angled toward the sectional adds seating without another full piece. An ottoman doubles as a footrest and extra seat.
- Lighting. One table lamp per side table minimum. Overhead lighting alone makes living rooms feel like offices.
The bedroom: up next
You will spend a third of your life in this room. Don't economize on the mattress.
- Bed frame. A panel bed with storage — like the Cabalynn Panel Bed with Storage — gives you drawers where the closet falls short. Prefer upholstered? The Cadmori Upholstered Panel Bed softens the room.
- Mattress. Buy the best you can afford; it's a 10-year purchase. Shop mattresses.
- Nightstands. One per side if the room allows — Adelaide 3-Drawer Nightstand keeps the clutter contained.
- Dresser. Only if the closet needs help. The Adelaide 9-Drawer Dresser pairs with the nightstand above for a matched set without trying too hard.
The dining room: buy once
Dining sets take abuse — daily meals, homework, holidays. Buy solid and buy once.
- Table + chairs. A complete set like the Genuine Marble Dining Table + 6 Chair Set solves the whole room in one decision. Prefer to mix? The Albero Dining Table pairs with almost any chair style.
- Size rule: allow 24 inches of table width per person and 36 inches of clearance behind chairs for people to get up. A 6-person table needs roughly a 10x12-foot room to breathe.
The home office: the remote-work reality
A huge share of the workforce is hybrid or remote now. A real desk in a real chair beats the kitchen table within a month.
- Desk + chair + lighting is the whole formula. Shop home office. Your back will thank you by week two.
The patio: don't skip it
If your climate gives you a real patio season, use it. A 5-piece outdoor sectional turns a concrete slab into a second living room for a fraction of indoor furniture prices. Shop outdoor.
Kids' rooms and guest rooms: the quick version
Don't overthink secondary bedrooms. The formula: bed + dresser + nightstand, done. A panel bed, a 6-drawer dresser, and a nightstand furnish a kid's or guest room completely. Kids' rooms get the durable, affordable pieces — save the statement furniture for the rooms you live in.
Your first-week shopping list
If the moving truck arrives Saturday, here's the minimum viable home:
- [ ] Sectional or sofa (order 3+ weeks ahead — it's the anchor, get it in the pipeline first)
- [ ] Mattress
- [ ] Bed frame
- [ ] One lamp per room you'll use after dark
- [ ] Shower curtain, toilet paper, paper towels (not furniture, but you'll thank us)
- [ ] Basic cookware set
Everything else — dining set, rugs, coffee table, decor — can land in weeks two through six. A new home furnished in layers looks better than one furnished in a panic anyway.
The money-smart way to do it
- Finance the anchors, cash-flow the accessories. Synchrony and Affirm financing at checkout lets you buy the sectional and mattress now and pay over time, while you buy lamps and rugs outright as you go.
- Select Club takes $50 off your first order — time your biggest purchase for that order.
- Every order ships free across the contiguous 48 states with threshold delivery; select products include free white-glove setup. Estimated delivery is 2–3 weeks, so order the sectional first and the decor last — it'll all land in the right sequence.
- 14-day returns on everything, so a piece that doesn't work in the room can go back (20% restocking fee capped at $500, you cover return freight — measure first and you'll never need it).
Frequently asked questions
What furniture should I buy first for a new home? In order: sectional or sofa, then mattress and bed, then dining table and chairs, then everything else. Sit, sleep, eat — then accessorize.
How much should I budget to furnish a living room? Put 60–70% of the room's budget into the anchor piece (sectional or sofa). A realistic living room runs from a few hundred for basics to several thousand for a full quality setup — the sectional is where the money goes.
Should I buy a matching furniture set or mix pieces? Either works. Matched sets (same collection bed + nightstands + dresser) are foolproof. Mixing works if you repeat one element — same wood tone, same color family — across pieces.
Can I finance furnishing a whole home? Yes — Synchrony and Affirm financing are available at checkout. Many buyers finance the big anchors (sectional, mattress) and pay cash for smaller pieces as they go.
How far ahead should I order before moving? Estimated delivery is 2–3 weeks. Order the sectional 3+ weeks before move-in so the anchor piece is in the pipeline; the mattress and bed follow, and decor and accessories can land whenever.
Where do you deliver? Free shipping covers the entire contiguous 48 states — every state, every order. We're based in the Houston area, but many of our customers aren't.
